#8 Brown bag it

This month we're trying to go without eating out. At all. Not even when we're on the road. So far, so good, but it's definitly been a temptation. After all, very few would prefer a brown bagged pb&j over tacos or a chicken sandwich when traveling in the c ar--maybe we're just weird that way. We actually don't eat out as a family very often, so the biggest adjustment has been for Duran. He has so many working lunches or crazy work days that don't allow him to come home. Combine that with very little fridge space at work and it gets tricky to pack a lunch. But, with a little creativity and a little more money spent on groceries that can be made into quick lunches, we are sticking to our goal.

What do you do?

I make a little extra of dinner the night before, and pack it in a Tupperware container. (okay, maybe not REAL Tupperware, but the fake kind... :) :)) Some meals are actually tastier the day after for lunch! He also packs a Nalgene bottle with water, and usually some fruit. That's what we do...

Sure, its easier for me and the kids. Rick's schedule is crazy too but when he really tries he can work around it. He went from at least 1 $5 meal a day to only spending $1 a day or less. Good for you.

Any specific meals that you like to pack?

Eating out adds up FAST! Some months Brandon gets lucky and the hospital feeds him free everyday. Other than that, I make extra for dinner and he takes it for lunch. I don't think we've ever gone a whole month without eating out once. I might have to try that sometime just to see if I can. It's more of just a challenge for me to see if I can plan and cook without throwing the towel in one day.

I know, that's really what it boils down to...not giving in on the nights when you don't feel like firing up the kitchen.
